The Concept

Meray Log (Urdu: "My People") was a short documentary series made under the LUMS Photographic Society that I led as President. The premise was simple: LUMS has a remarkable concentration of talented young artists (musicians, painters, poets, filmmakers, photographers) and almost none of them had been properly documented.

Meray Log was an attempt to change that. Each episode profiled one artist: who they were, what they made, and why they made it.

Direction & Production

  • Identified and selected subjects based on the quality and distinctiveness of their creative practice
  • Developed an interview structure that felt conversational rather than formal, letting subjects tell their own stories
  • Shot on location across LUMS campus and subjects' personal spaces, using available light where possible
  • Edited for rhythm and emotional arc, not just information delivery
  • Published through the LUMS Photographic Society's YouTube channel and social platforms

What It Represented

Meray Log was one of the first things I directed where the subject was someone else's creativity, not my own. Learning to subordinate your aesthetic choices to the story of another person, to make a film about a painter that feels like the painter and not the director, is a different skill entirely. This series taught me that.
